Self-worth, first.

Stand Up is a training program designed to help prevent street harassment and build safe, inclusive spaces for all, powered by L'Oréal Paris in partnership with the NGO Right To Be.
When we see someone fall, or drop something in public, we instinctively help out. Why don’t we have the same reaction when we see someone being sexually harassed? We see it happen, but uncomfortably look away. We feel the urge to speak up, but stay cautiously silent. We all want to do something about it, but don’t know what. Or worse, we end up thinking it’s "not a big deal." Not knowing what constitutes street harassment and what to do, limits our ability to take action, chipping away at the self-worth of men and women who suffer from street harassment.

L’OrĂ©al Paris and the NGO Right To Be have therefore joined forces to protect the self-worth of women and men, creating a set of proven tools to help people safely intervene when they are a victim or witness to harassment in public spaces.

The goal of the Stand Up program is to raise awareness on this undertestimate issue and to train people on how to react when facing it.

All over the world, 80% of women have experienced street harassment, and 85% of people declare there is a lack of training on how to intervene when witnessing it.
Because street harassment goes against everything L’OrĂ©al Paris stands for, the brand launched Stand Up against street harassment in 2020 in partnership with Right To Be. This program is focused on raising awareness about this global issue and training people on how to react safely when experiencing or witnessing it, based on the 5D’s methodology created by Right To Be, an international NGO expert in the fight against harassment of all forms. Right To Be’s 5D’s methodology is five simple and effective tools to help people safely intervene when they witness or experience street harassment. Stand Up also takes the training into the heart of communities and create a global, with the help of local non-profit organisations. Because nothing should stand between a woman and her self-worth.

Our vision

L’OrĂ©al Paris has always championed and celebrated women’s empowerment aiming to create a fairer, more inclusive, and respectful world where women are visible, powerful and decision makers. Street harassment goes against all of this. Street harassment is the main issue that hinders women’s intrinsic freedom and lead them to missing out on some important opportunities. That must change. With Stand Up against street harassment, we are aiming to make it change. We are aiming to ensure that women are visible in the society. We are aiming to ensure they are who they want to be.

L’OrĂ©al Paris conducted research with IPSOS

L'Oréal Paris conducted an international study with IPSOS to better understand the issue of sexual harassment in public spaces. The research demonstrated that it can be difficult to identify sexual harassment in public places and understand how to safely intervene.

YWCA

Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) was founded by a group of devoted Christian women in 1920. To uphold the principles of the World Young Women’s Christian Association (World YWCA), and follow Emma Robarts and Lady Mary Jane Kinnaird’s footsteps in gathering women with a prayer group and hostel that received young ladies who left home, the Association strives to advance the spiritual, mental, physical and social welfare of women, to promote their growth in Christian character and to cultivate Christian spirit of fellowship and service.

Since our inception, we have endeavored to strive for women’s rights such as eradicating illiteracy among women, promoting monogamy and “equal work for equal pay”. Advocating the caring spirit of Christ, and the purpose of “Enhancement of Life”, the Association now provides women-oriented services that moves with the times. We keep striving for gender awareness and equality as far as we could, with both educational and advocacy works including topics of action against sexual harassment.

As a diversified social service organisation with more than 106 units all over Hong Kong, we have an annual service attendance exceeding 3 million, serving different groups of people in need, including toddlers, children, youth, women, adults, elderly and families.

Hong Kong Young Women’s Christian Association is a member association of the World YWCA, the largest international women organisation which was established in 1894, and is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland.
